Education Minister Douglas Syakalima has hailed the implementation of the free education policy, citing significant benefits such as improved literacy, increased school enrolment, and a reduction in child marriages. Speaking in the National Assembly on Wednesday, Syakalima emphasized the transformative impact of the policy on Zambia’s education sector and society at large.

“The implementation of the free education policy has delivered significant benefits. Notably, it has led to a surge in school enrolments, with over 2 million learners returning to school. Additionally, the policy has contributed to a reduction in dropout rates, improved literacy and educational outcomes, and relieved financial burdens on families,” Syakalima stated.

He highlighted that beyond its direct impact on education, the policy is fostering broader societal change. The return of many young learners to school has played a key role in reducing child marriages, as more children, particularly girls, are now able to pursue their education instead of being forced into early marriages due to financial constraints.

The Minister further noted that the policy aligns with the government’s commitment to ensuring equitable access to quality education for all Zambian children. He reiterated that continued investment in infrastructure, teacher recruitment, and learning resources will be crucial in sustaining the gains made through the initiative.

Education experts and civil society groups have also lauded the free education policy, emphasizing its role in promoting social mobility and economic development. They argue that by eliminating school fees, the government has empowered more children to acquire knowledge and skills essential for Zambia’s future workforce.

As Zambia moves forward, stakeholders are calling for further efforts to enhance the quality of education, including addressing teacher shortages and improving school facilities. Minister Syakalima reaffirmed the government’s commitment to tackling these challenges to ensure that every child has access to a conducive learning environment.

With the 2026 general elections approaching, the success of the free education policy remains a key milestone for the administration, reinforcing its dedication to human capital development and national progress.
