The Ministry of Local Government has been granted treasury authority to procure 10 tractors to be distributed across seven constituencies in Lusaka. The goal of this initiative is to boost the Lusaka City Council’s capacity to manage the growing volumes of solid waste produced by households and as part of cash-for-work programs.
Speaking during a tour of the Kanyama and Lumumba areas, Nicholas Phiri, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government, emphasized that the new equipment would significantly contribute to promoting better hygiene across Lusaka. The addition of these tractors is expected to enhance waste collection efforts and improve overall sanitation within the city.
Meanwhile, Henry Kapata, the Information and Media Director Spokesperson, highlighted the importance of clearing drainages as part of the broader effort to prevent the spread of cholera and ensure the free flow of water. The clearing of drainages will reduce the risk of waterborne diseases by addressing potential blockages that can cause flooding and stagnant water, a breeding ground for harmful pathogens.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve urban infrastructure and enhance public health in Lusaka. By providing the Lusaka City Council with the necessary resources, the Ministry of Local Government aims to address the city’s waste management challenges and prevent disease outbreaks related to poor sanitation.
While the plan has received support, some critics have pointed to delays in other public services, such as the delivery of ambulances, questioning the government’s ability to fulfill all promises in a timely manner. Nonetheless, the introduction of the tractors is seen as a step toward enhancing Lusaka’s urban management and ensuring cleaner, healthier communities for its residents.
