The upgrading of the Kabwe-Ngabwe Road to bituminous standard is expected to unlock new economic opportunities and improve the lives of thousands of people in Zambia’s Central Province. The Road Development Agency (RDA) has officially signed contracts for the major infrastructure project, marking another significant milestone in the government’s ongoing investment in strategic transport networks. The road upgrade is designed to improve connectivity between Kabwe and Ngabwe districts while supporting economic growth across key sectors such as agriculture, mining, tourism, trade and investment. Better transport infrastructure will also provide safer and more reliable travel for residents, businesses and visitors throughout the region. The project reflects the government’s commitment to using infrastructure development as a foundation for sustainable economic and social transformation.
Speaking during the contract signing ceremony, RDA Director and Chief Executive Officer, Engineer Nelson Chuma, said the project would have far-reaching economic benefits beyond simply improving road conditions. He explained that upgrading the Kabwe-Ngabwe Road would make it easier for farmers to transport agricultural produce to markets, reducing delays and lowering transportation costs. Agriculture remains one of the most important sectors in Central Province, and improved road infrastructure is expected to help farmers access buyers more efficiently while reducing post-harvest losses caused by poor transport networks. The road will also support mining activities by improving the movement of equipment, minerals and workers between production areas and commercial centers. These improvements are expected to strengthen economic activity and attract further investment into the province.
Engineer Chuma also highlighted the importance of the road in supporting tourism, trade and regional development. Reliable roads encourage tourism by making destinations more accessible to both domestic and international visitors. Businesses also benefit from improved transport networks because goods can be moved more efficiently, reducing operational costs and improving supply chain reliability. The project has been divided into two major construction phases to ensure comprehensive coverage of the transport corridor. Lot One involves the upgrading of approximately 75 kilometers of the Kabwe-Ngabwe Road together with 10 kilometers of selected urban roads in Kabwe District, Central Province. The works will be undertaken by Lushion Investment Limited in joint venture with Nchifar Enterprise under a 24-month contract. This section of the project will improve both the main transport corridor and urban road networks that support local businesses and residential communities. The investment is expected to strengthen connectivity between urban and rural areas while improving traffic flow within Kabwe.
Lot Two will cover approximately 80 kilometers of the Kabwe-Ngabwe Road together with an additional 10 kilometers of selected urban roads in Ngabwe District. Like the first phase, the second contract will also be implemented over a period of 24 months. The project aims to create a reliable all-weather road that can be used safely throughout the year, including during the rainy season when many roads become difficult to navigate. Upon completion, the improved road network is expected to reduce travel times, improve road safety and lower vehicle operating costs for motorists and transport operators. These improvements will support more efficient movement of goods and people while promoting greater economic integration across the region.
Engineer Chuma described the signing of the contracts as clear evidence of the government’s determination to accelerate the delivery of quality road infrastructure throughout Zambia. He said the project reflects the government’s commitment to investing in infrastructure that supports economic growth, strengthens connectivity and improves livelihoods. According to him, the Kabwe-Ngabwe Road serves as a strategic transport corridor linking Kabwe and Ngabwe districts as well as surrounding communities. Once upgraded, the road will provide a dependable transport route that remains accessible throughout the year regardless of weather conditions. He emphasized that improved infrastructure remains an essential catalyst for socio-economic transformation, regional integration and inclusive national development.
Representatives from the contracting companies also welcomed the project and acknowledged its importance for local communities. Nchifar Enterprise Managing Director Farai Mwanamakondo explained that the Kabwe-Ngabwe Road has deteriorated over many years, making travel increasingly difficult for motorists and residents. He noted that road users have experienced serious challenges, especially during the rainy season when some sections become difficult or completely impassable. According to Mr. Mwanamakondo, the poor condition of the road has disrupted the transportation of people, agricultural produce and commercial goods while increasing transport costs and limiting economic opportunities throughout the region. He expressed optimism that the planned upgrade would address these long-standing challenges and support future development.
Lumandwe Resources Director Onno Munshya also expressed appreciation to the government and the Road Development Agency for the opportunity to participate in the project. He pledged that the company would not take the responsibility lightly and committed to delivering the infrastructure to the highest possible standards. High-quality construction will be essential to ensuring that the upgraded road provides long-term benefits and remains durable under increasing traffic volumes.
