Zambia’s media industry continues to experience significant growth as new investments, digital technologies and broadcasting platforms reshape how citizens access information and entertainment. Yesterday evening, Information and Media Permanent Secretary Mr. Thabo Kawana officiated at the AzamTV Zambia media cocktail in Lusaka, where he underscored the importance of stronger collaboration between the Government, media organizations and content providers. He described partnership as a key ingredient in building a modern, inclusive and responsive media environment that meets the evolving needs of the Zambian public. The event also marked an important milestone for Azam Media Zambia Limited, trading as AzamTV Zambia, following its successful entry into the country’s satellite television broadcasting sector. Mr. Kawana said the investment represents a positive step that will expand access to information, education and entertainment for people across Zambia while contributing to the continued transformation of the national broadcasting industry.
During his address, Mr. Kawana welcomed AzamTV Zambia into the country’s growing media landscape, noting that the company has arrived at a time when Zambia is embracing digital innovation across the communications sector. He explained that the transformation of the media industry requires stronger cooperation among Government institutions, broadcasters, content creators and technology providers to ensure that citizens receive timely, relevant and reliable information. According to the Permanent Secretary, collaboration encourages innovation, strengthens inclusiveness and allows the sector to respond more effectively to the changing information needs of communities throughout the country. He emphasized that partnerships between public and private stakeholders will help build a broadcasting industry that is both sustainable and capable of supporting national development. His remarks reflected the Government’s broader vision of creating an environment where the media can continue to grow while serving the interests of all Zambians.
Mr. Kawana also commended AzamTV Zambia for successfully entering the Zambian satellite television market, describing the platform as an important opportunity for local broadcasters and content producers. He noted that the company’s presence creates additional avenues for Zambian television stations to extend their audience reach beyond traditional broadcasting methods. At the same time, he highlighted the opportunities available to local filmmakers, producers, musicians, sports organizations and other creative professionals to showcase their work on a larger platform. Expanding access to satellite television allows local content to reach households in different parts of the country while increasing visibility for Zambian talent. This, he said, supports the growth of the country’s creative economy and encourages greater investment in locally produced programming.
The Permanent Secretary observed that Zambia’s media landscape continues to evolve rapidly as digital television, streaming services and pay television platforms become increasingly important sources of information and entertainment. He explained that technological advancements have changed the way households consume news, sports, educational programming and cultural content. These developments have made it easier for citizens to access a wider variety of local and international programming through modern broadcasting platforms. He added that investments in satellite television strengthen competition within the industry while giving consumers more viewing options. Such progress, he noted, demonstrates the country’s commitment to embracing digital transformation in the communications sector.
Mr. Kawana further praised AzamTV Zambia for helping bridge the digital divide by expanding access to both local and international television content. He emphasized that affordable and accessible broadcasting services play an essential role in ensuring that more citizens benefit from educational resources, news coverage and quality entertainment regardless of where they live. He stressed that improved access to information contributes to informed decision making, civic participation and social development. Extending broadcasting services to underserved communities also supports greater inclusion in the country’s digital economy. As satellite television continues to expand, more households are expected to benefit from enhanced connectivity and a broader range of programming.
One of the major announcements during the event was that AzamTV Zambia currently carries several local television stations on its platform, including ZNBC TV1, TV4, Prime TV1, TV2, Crown TV, ABN TV and Lumen TV. Mr. Kawana revealed that the company plans to introduce six additional local television channels next month, further strengthening the availability of Zambian programming. He said the expansion will significantly improve the visibility and accessibility of local broadcasters while providing audiences with greater content diversity. Increasing the number of local channels on satellite television platforms also creates more business opportunities for producers, advertisers and independent content creators. This continued expansion reflects growing confidence in Zambia’s broadcasting industry and its long-term development potential.
Mr. Kawana highlighted that prioritizing local content remains essential to preserving Zambia’s cultural identity while supporting the country’s creative industries. He explained that locally produced television programs tell authentic Zambian stories, celebrate national heritage and provide platforms for emerging talent. Encouraging broadcasters to invest in domestic productions also creates employment opportunities across the entertainment, production and media value chain. He urged media organizations to continue promoting local culture, sports, tourism and national achievements through high quality programming that resonates with audiences. Strengthening local content production, he said, is vital for ensuring that Zambia’s unique voices continue to be represented in an increasingly competitive global media environment.
The Permanent Secretary also reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to supporting the continued growth of the media sector by creating an enabling environment where media organizations can operate freely, responsibly and sustainably. He stressed the importance of investing in broadcasting infrastructure and services that make information and entertainment affordable for citizens in urban, peri urban and rural communities alike. According to Mr. Kawana, expanding broadcasting infrastructure is essential for ensuring equal access to communication services throughout the country. He encouraged both public and private sector stakeholders to continue investing in technologies that improve connectivity and strengthen media delivery. Such investments, he noted, will contribute to inclusive national development while supporting Zambia’s digital transformation agenda.
As he concluded his remarks, Mr. Kawana reminded media organizations that greater audience reach comes with greater responsibility. He encouraged broadcasters and content providers to produce programming that informs, educates and unites citizens while upholding professional standards and promoting credible information. He reiterated the Government’s commitment to maintaining strong collaboration with the private sector to ensure that Zambians continue to enjoy access to trustworthy news and quality entertainment. Wishing AzamTV Zambia success in its operations, he described the company’s entry into the market as another important milestone in the continued growth and modernization of Zambia’s broadcasting sector. With expanding investment, stronger partnerships and a growing emphasis on local content, Zambia’s media industry appears well positioned to deliver greater opportunities for broadcasters, content creators and audiences in the years ahead.
