The Government of the Republic of Zambia, through the Ministry of Health, has praised pharmacists for their vital contribution to strengthening the country’s healthcare system. The recognition was made during the Pharmaceutical Society of Zambia Scientific Conference and Annual General Meeting held in Livingstone. Officials described pharmacists as essential professionals who support every level of healthcare delivery, from hospitals to community health services. The Government emphasized that no health system can function effectively without a strong pharmaceutical sector that ensures access to safe and effective medicines. This acknowledgement reflects ongoing efforts to improve healthcare quality and expand access to essential medical services across the country.
Permanent Secretary for Technical Services in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Kennedy Lishimpi, stated that the Government recognises the pharmaceutical sector as a foundation of a strong and reliable healthcare system. He explained that access to essential medicines is a basic requirement for delivering quality healthcare services. Without reliable medicine supply systems, even advanced hospitals cannot meet patient needs effectively. He added that Government is actively implementing reforms aimed at improving governance, efficiency, and accountability in medicine supply chains. These reforms are designed to ensure that essential medicines reach every health facility, including those in remote and underserved areas.
Dr. Lishimpi further highlighted the wide-ranging role pharmacists play in the healthcare system. He described them as custodians of medicines and key partners in patient care and public health programmes. Pharmacists also support regulatory systems, strengthen supply chains, and contribute to pharmaceutical innovation. Their work ensures that medicines are safe, effective, and used correctly by patients. He added that pharmacists also play an important role in antimicrobial stewardship, which helps reduce drug resistance and improve treatment outcomes. Their involvement in research and scientific development also supports long-term improvements in healthcare delivery.
He noted that pharmacists working in hospitals, community pharmacies, regulatory institutions, research centres, and supply chain systems all contribute to the availability and safe use of medicines. Their combined efforts ensure that health facilities remain stocked and that patients receive appropriate treatment. He stressed that the effectiveness of the healthcare system depends heavily on the professionalism and coordination of pharmaceutical services. He also reaffirmed Government’s commitment to strengthening systems that support medicine availability and quality control. This includes continued investment in infrastructure, human resources, and regulatory oversight.
Meanwhile, Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Agency (ZAMMSA) Acting Director General, Mr. Liyoka Liyoka, commended the Government for its continued support to the pharmaceutical sector. He attributed recent improvements in medicine availability and supply chain management to strong political will and leadership under President Hakainde Hichilema. He noted that funding for medicines and medical supplies has increased significantly over the years, rising from less than K1 billion five years ago to approximately K7 billion in 2026. He said this increase has strengthened procurement systems and improved the availability of essential medicines in health facilities across the country. He also emphasized that sustained funding remains critical to maintaining these gains.
Provincial Health Director for Southern Province, Dr. Callistus Kaayunga, also expressed appreciation to Government and cooperating partners for supporting the health sector. He noted that health facilities in the province have benefited from improved supplies of essential medicines and medical products. He said this support has helped ensure continuity of care for patients and reduced shortages in key facilities. He added that strong coordination between Government and partners has played an important role in improving health service delivery. He encouraged continued collaboration to further strengthen healthcare systems at provincial and national levels.
The Government’s recognition of pharmacists reflects a broader commitment to improving healthcare delivery and strengthening the pharmaceutical sector.
