President Hichilema Welcomes Ramsar Secretary General Dr. Musonda Mumba in Lusaka

President Hakainde Hichilema has welcomed Dr. Musonda Mumba, Secretary General of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, during a courtesy call at State House. Dr. Mumba, a Zambian citizen, was commended for her outstanding global leadership in wetland conservation.

President Hichilema congratulated Dr. Mumba for representing Zambia with distinction on the international stage. He praised her efforts in advancing the goals of the Ramsar Convention, an international treaty focused on the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands.

Zambia currently hosts eight Ramsar-designated wetlands, including Bangweulu Swamps, Kafue Flats, and the Zambezi Floodplains. These ecosystems are vital for preserving biodiversity and supporting rural communities through agriculture, fishing, and tourism.

President Hichilema reaffirmed Zambia’s strong commitment to the Ramsar Convention. He emphasized the importance of managing wetlands sustainably to protect their ecological value and ensure benefits for future generations.

The visit by Dr. Mumba highlights Zambia’s key role in global environmental governance and the importance of local leadership in driving international sustainability efforts.
