Defence Permanent Secretary Visits Zambia Air Force, Applauds Role in National Food Security

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Defence, Mr. Maambo Haamaundu, paid a courtesy call on Zambia Air Force (ZAF) Commander, Lieutenant General Oscar Msitu Nyoni, on 30 June 2025. The visit, described as long overdue by Lt Gen Nyoni, marked an important engagement between the Ministry and the Air Force leadership.

Welcoming Mr. Haamaundu, Lt Gen Nyoni expressed his delight at finally hosting the Permanent Secretary at ZAF Headquarters. He highlighted the significance of such interactions in strengthening collaboration and enhancing the operational alignment between the Ministry of Defence and the Zambia Air Force.

During the visit, Mr. Haamaundu was given an in-depth presentation on ZAF operations, delivered by Colonel David Banda from the Operations Department. The presentation outlined the Air Force’s strategic objectives, operational readiness, and ongoing contributions to national development.

In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary thanked Lt Gen Nyoni and the entire ZAF command for the warm reception and informative briefing. He expressed particular appreciation for the Air Force’s swift and effective response to the Presidential directive calling on all military wings to engage in agricultural production during peacetime to support Zambia’s food security.

Mr. Haamaundu commended the Air Force’s proactive involvement in agriculture, stating that their contribution is vital to enhancing the country’s food basket and promoting national self-sufficiency.

Sending a clear message to those attempting to encroach on military land, the Permanent Secretary issued a stern warning. He emphasized that the women and men in uniform are committed to protecting military property and will take firm action against any illegal activities.

Describing his visit as both fruitful and highly engaging, Mr. Haamaundu reiterated the Ministry’s support for ZAF’s mission and ongoing development projects. He highlighted the importance of continued cooperation between the Ministry of Defence and all branches of the Zambia Defence Force to advance national interests and security.
