In a poignant moment of regional solidarity, Zambia welcomed His Excellency General Constantino Chiwenga, Vice President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, who arrived in Lusaka bearing a heartfelt message of condolence from Zimbabwean President, His Excellency Dr. Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa.

The message was delivered in honour of the late Edgar Chagwa Lungu, Zambia’s sixth Republican President, whose passing has plunged the nation into mourning. President Hakainde Hichilema received Vice President Chiwenga on behalf of the Zambian people and expressed deep gratitude for the gesture of support from Zimbabwe.

“We are profoundly moved by this solemn gesture from President Mnangagwa and the people of Zimbabwe during this dark chapter in our nation’s history,” President Hichilema stated. “It is a testament to the enduring bonds of solidarity and brotherhood between our two nations.”

The visit by Vice President Chiwenga underlined the depth of diplomatic and fraternal relations between Zambia and Zimbabwe — ties that have been shaped by shared struggles, regional cooperation, and mutual respect. Zimbabwe’s expression of sympathy during Zambia’s time of grief reflects the spirit of unity that continues to guide Southern African nations in moments of both triumph and loss.

President Lungu, who served from 2015 to 2021, left a significant mark on Zambia’s political and social landscape. His death has drawn tributes from leaders across the African continent, with Zimbabwe’s message standing out as a powerful symbol of neighbourly compassion and respect.

President Hichilema reiterated that Zambia remains united in mourning and in memory, saying, “Such gestures remind us that we are never alone. As we honour the legacy of our former President, we are strengthened by the unwavering support of our regional brothers and sisters.”

The condolence message from Zimbabwe adds to the growing chorus of voices recognising Edgar Lungu’s role in shaping modern Zambia and reinforces the importance of unity in times of sorrow.
