The Government of Zambia recently welcomed a courtesy call from the World Health Organization (WHO) Resident Representative to Zambia, His Excellency Dr. Clement L. Peter Lasuba. During the visit, both parties engaged in productive discussions focused on enhancing Zambia’s capacity for preparedness, prevention, and response to public health threats.

As the Global Champion for Cholera Control, Zambia continues to prioritize maternal and newborn health, recognizing that a robust health sector is fundamental to the country’s development agenda. The government reaffirmed its strong partnership with the WHO and other stakeholders to collaboratively address Zambia’s pressing health challenges.

In a notable development, Zambia is set to host the WHO Regional Committee meeting in August, highlighting the enduring collaboration and mutual trust between WHO and the Government of the Republic of Zambia. The meeting will also feature the planned launch of the National Cholera Elimination Plan — a comprehensive, multisectoral strategy aimed at accelerating efforts to control and ultimately eradicate cholera in the country.

The government remains committed to growing the economy to increase domestic resource allocation for health. Through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), continuous investments are being made to ensure that every health facility across Zambia is equipped with a functional maternity wing, thereby bringing quality healthcare closer to communities nationwide.

These efforts, supported by WHO and other partners, are expected to significantly strengthen Zambia’s health systems and improve health outcomes for its citizens.
