Zambia’s national football team has officially settled into camp in Bloemfontein, South Africa, ahead of their highly anticipated opening match against Comoros in the 2025 COSAFA Cup. Head coach Wedson Nyirenda has called on the nation to rally behind the team as they prepare to kick off their campaign tomorrow.

Speaking to the media at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport shortly before the team’s departure, Nyirenda expressed full confidence in the squad’s readiness, stressing that the players understand the weight of representing a country with such a proud footballing history. He stated that the team is not only focused on lifting the COSAFA Cup but also using the tournament to sharpen its edge ahead of the African Nations Championship (CHAN).

“Zambia is a footballing nation; our fans don’t settle for less in any tournament. There is nothing like a small tournament in Zambia, so as long as you don that jersey, you have to deliver,” said Nyirenda.

The coach highlighted that this year’s COSAFA Cup is more than just a competition—it’s a critical building block in developing a cohesive, competitive squad capable of taking on continental challenges. He praised the blend of youth and experience in the team, emphasizing that every player selected has the ability to perform at the highest level.

Nyirenda also stressed the importance of support from home, urging fans to follow the team closely, send encouragement through social media, and continue believing in Zambian football. He said the players draw strength from knowing the nation is behind them, even when playing away from home.

The squad, made up largely of locally based talent, was selected with a clear goal: to foster team chemistry and give rising stars international exposure while maintaining Zambia’s competitive edge in regional football.

The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has also voiced its support, noting that the COSAFA Cup provides a valuable platform for evaluating players in a tournament setting while reinforcing Zambia’s legacy as a dominant force in Southern African football.

Zambia will face Comoros in their opening match, a fixture that fans are already eagerly anticipating. With preparations now in full swing and team morale reportedly high, all eyes will be on Nyirenda and his squad as they aim to start the tournament on a winning note.
