The United Kingdom’s Minister for Africa, Lord Collins of Highbury, has embarked on a visit to Zambia as part of renewed efforts to deepen bilateral cooperation, with a strong focus on economic growth, investment, renewable energy, and poverty reduction.

During his official visit, Lord Collins is scheduled to meet with senior Zambian government officials to reinforce the UK’s strategic partnership with Zambia. A key highlight of the discussions will be the UK-Zambia Green Growth Compact — a landmark agreement aimed at mobilising £2.5 billion in UK private sector investment into Zambia to drive sustainable economic development.

First signed in 2021 and reaffirmed by then UK Development Minister Anneliese Dodds in December 2024, the Compact focuses on creating jobs, boosting investment, and advancing green growth initiatives in both countries.

In a significant boost to trade relations, the UK recently appointed Calvin Bailey, who has Zambian heritage, as its new trade envoy to Zambia. His appointment reflects a growing commitment on both sides to strengthen investment and business ties.

As part of his itinerary, Lord Collins will tour Zambia Sugar, a subsidiary of Associated British Foods, and Kaonga Mini Hospital — both seen as strong examples of responsible UK-backed investments that contribute to inclusive growth and better public services in Zambia.

The Kaonga Mini Hospital forms part of a larger health infrastructure project supported by UK Export Finance. The initiative, led by British company NMS International, has already delivered five district hospitals and 111 mini-hospitals across the country, helping to improve access to healthcare for thousands of Zambians.

Zambia’s rich natural resources and strategic position in the global clean energy transition are central to discussions during the visit. The country is increasingly viewed as a key partner in renewable energy development, following Minister of Energy Makozo Chikote’s recent participation in the International Summit on the Future of Energy Security held in London. Zambia has since been invited to join the UK-led Global Clean Power Alliance — a G20 initiative that brings together countries from the Global North and South to accelerate the shift toward clean, sustainable energy.

In addition to high-level government engagements, Lord Collins is expected to consult with nutrition experts and civil society leaders to gain insights into Zambia’s efforts to combat malnutrition and explore areas for further UK support in health and social development.

British High Commissioner to Zambia, Rebecca Terzeon, welcomed the visit, stating: “We are honoured to welcome Lord Collins during this solemn time. His visit is a testament to the enduring strength of the UK-Zambia partnership and our shared commitment to a prosperous, sustainable future.”

Lord Collins’s visit underscores the UK’s long-standing ties with Zambia and signals a renewed commitment to fostering a resilient, inclusive, and forward-looking partnership that supports both economic development and environmental sustainability.
