Amid swirling rumors and widespread speculation about the alleged death of former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu, President Hakainde Hichilema has once again shown leadership characterized by maturity, calmness, and a deep respect for national values.
While the Patriotic Front (PF) leadership and some of its supporters have responded with panic, suspicion, and political hostility, President Hichilema has maintained a dignified silence. Rather than politicizing the situation, he has prioritized peace and unity during this sensitive time.
In any democracy, former heads of state are regarded not only as retired leaders but as national assets. They represent the country’s history, its political transitions, and important lessons—both positive and negative. For this reason, matters concerning their health or well-being demand careful handling, marked by responsibility and respect, not political recklessness.
Unfortunately, some PF officials and sympathizers have mirrored the emotional and confrontational style of leadership that contributed to their 2021 election defeat. Instead of providing clear, reassuring statements or engaging the public with verified facts, they have chosen to sow confusion through conflicting messages on social media. This approach has further fragmented an already tense public discourse.
President Hichilema’s silence should not be mistaken for ignorance or indifference. It is a strategic act of leadership, signaling his commitment to national unity and his refusal to be drawn into political drama at a time when Zambia needs clarity, not chaos.
It is now crucial for PF leadership and those close to the former president’s family to face reality with honesty and respect. The public deserves transparency and dignity during the mourning period—not political manipulation or blame games.
Zambia belongs to all its citizens—past, present, and future. In moments of uncertainty, the nation looks to its leaders—whether in office or retired—for steady guidance and maturity. President Hichilema has set this example. It is time for others to follow suit.
