Zambia is set to welcome a fresh, locally adapted production of Pierre Beaumarchais’ globally acclaimed play Figaro’s Barber of Seville. The beloved classic will be staged at Lusaka’s Alliance Française cultural arts centre, with six performances scheduled between June 27 and July 6, 2025.
The production follows an agreement sealed by theatre actress Mariah Mukuka, who leads the adaptation that promises to blend the timeless story with Zambian cultural elements, traditional music, and humour. Known worldwide and often hailed as “one of the most-loved operas,” The Barber of Seville has seen numerous adaptations across Australia, Italy, and the United States. This Zambian version, however, is distinguished by its deep connection to local narratives and artistic collaboration.
Mukuka, who also stars in the play, described the project as “one of the most collaborative productions” she has been involved in. The cast includes emerging local talents such as voice-over artist Maposa Lungu, Lemekani Mtonga, Clive Nyirenda, Robinson Nsofwa, Mwape Shumba, and Henry Simbeya. Mukuka noted the dynamic creative process that led to the invention of a new character during rehearsals, underscoring the organic and innovative nature of the production.
Figaro’s Barber of Seville is a comic tale weaving themes of love, deception, and clever scheming. It follows Count Almaviva’s pursuit of the beautiful Rosine, who is guarded by her controlling guardian, Dr. Bartholo, intent on marrying her himself. The witty barber Figaro orchestrates a series of clever tricks to help the Count win Rosine’s heart.
Mukuka’s adaptation infuses the narrative with uniquely Zambian references and humour, aiming to resonate with audiences on a personal level. “My goal is to tell stories that are culturally rich, emotionally layered whilst adding a local touch and bringing it as close to home as possible,” she explains. “This play will reflect the current Zambian experience, people, and realities so that even a silly character feels relatable to viewers.”
A US-based actress with extensive experience, Mukuka hopes the production will not only entertain but also offer meaningful reflections on local life and culture.
Alliance Française Director Olivier Durand praised Mukuka’s vision, highlighting how the adaptation bridges the cultural distance between Zambia and France. “By choosing French classics and adapting them to the Zambian context, Maria and her team create something innovative, fun, and entertaining, which perfectly fulfils this goal. It shows that despite being separated by centuries and thousands of kilometres, some values are universal, and our audience can relate to them.”
This production of Figaro’s Barber of Seville stands as a vibrant example of cultural exchange, artistic innovation, and the power of theatre to unite diverse experiences through storytelling.
