Kansanshi Mining Plc has announced that its US$1.25 billion S3 expansion project is on track for commissioning in the second half of this year, marking a significant milestone in the company’s ongoing efforts to boost production and enhance operational efficiency.
Speaking during a tour of the S3 plant on Thursday, Kansanshi Mining Operations Superintendent Patricia Mankubwa explained that the project is expected to double the mine’s ore processing capacity. “The S3 project is actually designed to treat about 25 million tons of ore through the plant. Currently, Kansanshi, through the three circuits that we have in the main plant, is able to process about 28 million tons. So, with the addition of the S3 plant, we’re looking at increasing our total processing capacity to approximately 53 million tons,” she said.
The expansion will enable Kansanshi Mining to maintain its position as one of the leading copper producers in Zambia. The new S3 plant incorporates advanced processing technology and equipment, which will allow for more efficient ore recovery and improved overall plant performance.
Meanwhile, Mine Corporate Affairs Superintendent Ryan Ellis highlighted the operational challenges the mine has faced due to load shedding. He revealed that Kansanshi Mining spent US$55 million in 2024 to source power from external suppliers in order to maintain uninterrupted operations. “Load shedding has had a significant impact on our operations. To mitigate this, we had to procure power from outside sources at a substantial cost. In 2024 alone, we spent around US$55 million on external power,” Ellis said.
Despite these challenges, the company remains committed to its expansion plans and long-term growth strategy. The S3 project is a key component of this strategy, aimed at ensuring Kansanshi Mining can continue to contribute meaningfully to Zambia’s economy through increased production and job creation.
The S3 expansion comes at a time when global demand for copper remains strong, driven by the growing need for metals in renewable energy, electric vehicles, and infrastructure development. By expanding its processing capacity, Kansanshi Mining is positioning itself to capitalise on this demand and support Zambia’s ambitions to strengthen its mining sector.
As the commissioning of the S3 plant approaches, Kansanshi Mining Plc is poised to enter a new phase of growth that will not only enhance its operational capabilities but also create greater value for the local economy and the nation at large.
