NKANA FC striker Idris Mbombo has called on Zambian forwards to push beyond their limits and elevate their goal-scoring standards as the new MTN Super League season approaches. Mbombo, who finished the 2024/2025 campaign as joint top scorer alongside Power Dynamos’ Titus Chansa, with both netting 13 goals, said the current benchmark is not enough for strikers aiming to dominate African football.
Despite earning the prestigious Golden Boot, Mbombo expressed dissatisfaction with his goal tally, admitting that it fell short of his personal goals as a leading striker in the league. “Thirteen goals are not enough for someone who wants to be the best. I know I can do more, and I have to prove that next season,” he stated.
Reflecting on the just-ended season, the Congolese-born forward pointed to a slow start as the reason for his relatively modest output. “The start wasn’t good for me. I didn’t start well but I finished strong, and I have to work on it next season and push on starting well so that I can score more,” Mbombo explained.
Known for his physical presence and eye for goal, Mbombo believes that consistency from the very first matchday will be crucial to improving his numbers and helping NKANA FC challenge for titles. He also challenged his fellow strikers across the league to set higher standards and push themselves harder in training and on matchdays.
“If we want to compete at a higher level as a league, the strikers must raise the bar. We need to be scoring 20 or more goals a season. That’s the target,” he said.
Mbombo’s comments come at a time when Zambian clubs are striving to make a greater impact in continental competitions, where clinical finishing often makes the difference. With pre-season preparations already underway, the striker’s words serve as both a personal motivator and a rallying cry for attacking players across the country.
As one of the most experienced and high-profile strikers in the league, Idris Mbombo is looking to set the tone not only for NKANA FC but also for a new generation of goal-scorers in Zambian football.
