The International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) on 4th June 2025 officially launched its Election Observation Mission (EOM) in the Republic of Burundi, as the country holds its local and parliamentary elections today, 5th June 2025. This initiative underscores the ICGLR’s commitment to promoting democratic governance and ensuring electoral integrity across the region.
The mission comprises 48 observers drawn from ICGLR Member States and the Conference Secretariat. Zambia is honoured to participate in this crucial regional exercise aimed at fostering transparency and credibility in Burundi’s electoral process.
Leading the Zambian delegation is Mr. Christopher Sitwala, National Coordinator for the ICGLR in Zambia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. Zambian observers, along with their regional counterparts, have been deployed across various provinces in Burundi to monitor and assess the conduct of the elections. Their work will be guided by ICGLR protocols as well as internationally recognised democratic standards.
“We are proud to be part of this mission, which reflects our collective commitment as a region to strengthening democratic institutions and promoting peace and stability through credible electoral processes,” Mr. Sitwala remarked ahead of today’s polling.
Observers will assess multiple aspects of the electoral process, including the voting environment, adherence to electoral laws, transparency of the vote counting, and respect for fundamental rights and freedoms during the elections.
The ICGLR’s involvement in Burundi’s elections is part of a broader mandate to support member states in building democratic governance and preventing electoral-related conflicts. The Election Observation Mission also aims to foster regional solidarity and cooperation in upholding the principles of democracy.
The electoral process in Burundi continues with the next phase scheduled for 23rd July 2025, when Senatorial Elections will be held. The ICGLR will maintain its presence and monitoring efforts through this next stage to ensure the entire electoral calendar proceeds in a fair and transparent manner.
As the region looks on, the ICGLR’s mission in Burundi represents a vital step in strengthening democratic practices and promoting peace across the Great Lakes Region. Zambia, through its participation, reaffirms its dedication to supporting regional efforts that uphold democracy and good governance.
