The Zambia Air Force (ZAF) has launched an internal investigation following public outrage over a viral video showing a ZAF vehicle driving past an accident scene along the Great East Road without stopping to offer help.
The footage, widely circulated on social media, captured a marked ZAF vehicle with personnel on board moving past the scene without rendering any assistance—a move that has drawn criticism from citizens and raised questions about the conduct of military personnel in civilian settings.
In response to the incident, ZAF Director of Public Relations and Foreign Liaison, Colonel Mutale Kasoma, issued a statement assuring the public that the Air Force is treating the matter with the seriousness it deserves.
“The Zambia Air Force (ZAF) Command has noted with concern a video that has surfaced showing a ZAF vehicle passing an accident scene without stopping,” Colonel Kasoma said. “We have since instituted an internal inquiry to understand the full circumstances and take appropriate action on the personnel involved.”
Colonel Kasoma emphasized that the behavior displayed by the officers does not reflect the values and principles of the Zambia Air Force nor those of the Zambian people. He reiterated ZAF’s commitment to professionalism, integrity, and public service, especially in situations that involve civilian safety and emergency response.
“The Air Force holds all its members to high standards of conduct, both in uniform and in public. We deeply regret the incident and any distress it may have caused,” he added.
The statement comes amid growing calls from the public and civil society organizations for the government and defense institutions to enforce accountability and ensure that uniformed personnel respond appropriately during emergencies.
As the inquiry progresses, ZAF has pledged to be transparent in its findings and to take necessary disciplinary measures should any breach of conduct be confirmed.
This incident serves as a reminder of the critical role that all members of society, including military personnel, play in supporting one another, especially during times of crisis. The outcome of the investigation is expected to set a precedent on the standards expected of national service members in their interactions with civilians.
