SWEDFUND has approved a substantial grant of 12,000,000 SEK (approximately $1.2 million USD) to Zambia to support critical technical studies and implementation efforts aimed at upgrading the National Control Center (NCC) and advancing power quality and renewable energy initiatives. This funding marks a significant step in bolstering Zambia’s energy infrastructure and diversifying its energy portfolio.
The grant was formalized during a signing ceremony held on Monday, where two agreements were inked, each allocating 6,000,000 SEK to specific projects. Speaking at the event, Justine Loongo, Managing Director of Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation Limited (ZESCO), expressed gratitude to SwedFund for their vital support.
“Let me first start by extending our heartfelt appreciation to SwedFund, whose visionary support and funding have made this partnership possible. We are pleased to share that following a thorough grant application process, SwedFund has approved this grant to facilitate essential pre-implementation works,” Loongo stated.
The funding will enable comprehensive technical studies that are crucial for identifying and defining the optimal solutions required to upgrade the National Control Center. This center is pivotal for Zambia’s electricity grid management, enhancing power quality, and integrating renewable energy sources into the national grid.
Loongo emphasized the alignment of the project with the Zambian government’s agenda to secure energy supply through a diversified energy mix. “This partnership will help strengthen the resilience and reliability of our power system, supporting sustainable development and ensuring that Zambia continues to advance towards clean energy goals,” he added.
The initiative will also focus on improving power quality, addressing challenges such as voltage fluctuations and outages that affect both residential and industrial consumers. By incorporating renewable energy projects, Zambia aims to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and increase the share of green energy in its national grid.
SWEDFUND’s investment reflects its commitment to fostering sustainable development and energy security in Africa by supporting projects that deliver both environmental and socio-economic benefits.
This grant is expected to catalyze further investments and collaborations that will contribute to Zambia’s energy transition and long-term economic growth, positioning the country as a leader in renewable energy adoption in the region.
With this funding, Zambia takes a decisive step towards modernizing its energy infrastructure and achieving a resilient, clean, and inclusive energy future.
