In a strategic move to strengthen Zambia’s healthcare and agricultural sectors, President Hakainde Hichilema has extended an invitation to Czech companies to invest in the country’s pharmaceutical industry. The goal, he said, is to enhance Zambia’s capacity to produce generic and specialised drugs as well as animal vaccines locally.
Speaking at State House during a courtesy call by a delegation from the Czech Republic, President Hichilema emphasised the need to deepen bilateral cooperation between the two nations. He highlighted existing collaboration in education, agriculture, and health, calling for a broader and more impactful partnership.
“We know that the base is good; the work that we are doing together with the Czech Republic in education, agriculture, health — I’m very happy about it,” President Hichilema said. “We invite the Czech businesses to invest in Zambia’s health sector to increase our capacity to manufacture generic, specialised drugs and animal vaccines.”
The President’s remarks reflect Zambia’s ongoing efforts to reduce dependence on imported medicines and medical supplies. By encouraging foreign direct investment in pharmaceutical manufacturing, the government aims to strengthen the country’s health security and improve access to essential medicines for both humans and animals.
Zambia currently imports the majority of its pharmaceuticals, which poses challenges in terms of cost, supply chain disruptions, and timely access to medications. The proposed investment by Czech companies could help build local production capacity, create jobs, and ensure more affordable healthcare solutions for the population.
The initiative also aligns with Zambia’s broader economic agenda, which focuses on industrialisation, value addition, and sustainable development. By inviting Czech businesses to partner in these areas, President Hichilema aims to position Zambia as a regional hub for pharmaceutical innovation and vaccine development.
The Czech Republic has a well-established pharmaceutical and biotech sector, known for its high standards and cutting-edge research. A partnership with Zambia could therefore bring technical expertise, modern manufacturing technologies, and new business opportunities to both countries.
As Zambia seeks to modernise its healthcare infrastructure and bolster its local pharmaceutical capabilities, the President’s call to action marks a significant step toward meaningful international cooperation. With support from trusted partners like the Czech Republic, Zambia’s vision for a resilient and self-sufficient healthcare system is gradually becoming a reality.
