At the inaugural Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Digital Trade Forum, President Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia expressed strong solidarity with President Advocate Duma Gideon Boko of Botswana, reaffirming their shared vision for a prosperous, self-reliant Africa. The forum served as a vital platform for the continent’s leaders to strategise on harnessing digital trade as a catalyst for economic transformation.

President Hichilema emphasised that Africa’s advancement hinges on dismantling trade barriers and creating an environment where local enterprises can flourish. He underscored the urgent need to unlock the continent’s immense potential, highlighting that Africa’s vast natural resources should serve as a foundation for prosperity, not be a cause for continued stagnation.

In his address, the Zambian President called for enhanced intra-African cooperation in light of evolving global dynamics and the significant reduction in Official Development Assistance (ODA). He stated that the future of the continent lies in deepening economic ties among African nations and fostering inclusive growth.

“Our commitment to implementing the AfCFTA Digital Trade Protocol remains steadfast,” said President Hichilema, pointing to the protocol as a key enabler of cross-border e-commerce, investment, and innovation. He noted that Africa’s young and dynamic population stands to benefit immensely from digital trade opportunities that transcend national borders.

President Hichilema also reiterated the urgent need to end internal conflicts that continue to impede development in various regions. He advocated for unity, stability, and a continental focus on economic transformation over political and military confrontations.

Later in the day, President Hichilema held a bilateral meeting with President Boko, where the two leaders discussed matters of mutual interest, including strategies to boost trade, create jobs, and improve the standard of living for their citizens. The meeting underscored a mutual commitment to collaboration and regional development.

The Zambian Head of State concluded with a call to action: “Together, let’s unlock Africa’s potential and build a prosperous future.”

The Digital Trade Forum, under the AfCFTA framework, marks a significant milestone in Africa’s journey towards a more integrated, digitally empowered economic landscape. As leaders like Hichilema and Boko continue to champion regional cooperation, the dream of a thriving, interconnected Africa moves closer to reality.
