President Hakainde Hichilema has called for the speedy completion of the 88-kilometre Batoka–Maamba Road, a critical transport corridor supporting Zambia’s economic backbone.
During an on-the-spot check conducted today, the President assessed the ongoing construction works and engaged with project stakeholders. He emphasized the urgency of delivering the project on time, given the road’s national economic significance.
“This is not just a road for Batoka or Maamba; it is a lifeline that supports the movement of people, goods, and services across the country,” President Hichilema stated. “We urge the contractor to speed up the works. This is an important and strategic infrastructure project.”
The Batoka–Maamba Road plays a vital role in linking the coal mining town of Maamba with other parts of the country, facilitating trade, boosting regional connectivity, and supporting Zambia’s energy production efforts. The area is home to the Maamba Collieries Limited coal mine and thermal power plant, which feeds directly into the national electricity grid.
The President reiterated his government’s commitment to investing in infrastructure that directly impacts the economy and improves the lives of citizens. He stressed that roads like the Batoka–Maamba corridor are not just development markers but also enablers of business growth, access to markets, and job creation.
“We want to see real value from every Kwacha spent. Quality, efficiency, and timely completion must be the standard for all national infrastructure projects,” President Hichilema added.
Local communities and businesses have long awaited the completion of this road, as it is expected to ease transportation, reduce vehicle maintenance costs, and improve access to essential services.
The President’s visit highlights the New Dawn administration’s hands-on approach in monitoring development projects and ensuring accountability from contractors. The government is keen to ensure that infrastructure investments yield tangible socio-economic benefits for all Zambians.
With this renewed push from the Head of State, the Batoka–Maamba Road is now under national spotlight as a top-priority project expected to catalyse economic activity and regional integration once completed.
