Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) President Keith Mweemba has extended his heartfelt congratulations to Copper Queens captain Barbra Banda and other trailblazers in Zambian women’s football, following their outstanding recognition at the National Sports Awards.
In a statement released this week, Mweemba expressed immense pride in Banda’s accomplishment, after she was named Best Female Sportswoman of the Year—a title that cements her status as a national icon and global football star.
“It is with immense pride that I congratulate Barbra Banda, Copper Queens captain, for being named Best Female Sportswoman of the Year,” Mweemba wrote.
The FAZ president also praised the Zambia U17 National Women’s Team for being named Female Team of the Year, an achievement that highlights the rising talent and growing strength of women’s football in the country. Leading that charge is Mercy Chipasula, the U17 captain, who won the Best Young Female Sportswoman of the Year Award.
In recognition of leadership and technical excellence, Carol Kayemba, head coach of the U17 national team, was named Female Coach of the Year, earning plaudits for her role in shaping Zambia’s next generation of football stars.
Further solidifying Zambia’s football dominance, the Football Association of Zambia was awarded Federation of the Year, a testament to its commitment to the development and governance of the sport across all levels.
Mweemba used the moment to honor his predecessor, Mr. Andrew Ndanga Kamanga, and his executive, crediting their leadership for laying the groundwork for these historic achievements.
“As President of the Football Association of Zambia, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to my predecessor, Mr. Andrew Ndanga Kamanga, and his executive for laying the foundation for these achievements. Their hard work and dedication have paved the way for this success,” he said.
The accolades come at a pivotal time for Zambian football, as both the senior and junior women’s teams continue to shine on the regional and international stage. These honors not only reflect individual brilliance but also underscore the collective progress made in nurturing female talent in sport.
With the strong support of FAZ under Mweemba’s leadership, the future of women’s football in Zambia looks brighter than ever.
