Reigning champions Zambia have officially departed for Windhoek, Namibia, ahead of the 2025 COSAFA Girls’ Under-17 Championship, which will run from May 10 to 17. The Copper Princesses, fresh from an impressive campaign last year, boarded a South African Airways flight early Thursday morning with high hopes and a fierce determination to retain their crown.

The Zambian squad heads into the tournament with a strong track record and growing continental reputation, having clinched back-to-back qualifications for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. Head coach Carol Kanyemba, who masterminded last year’s COSAFA triumph, leads the team once again, bringing experience, tactical acumen, and a clear sense of purpose.

Speaking before departure, Coach Kanyemba acknowledged the weight of expectations that comes with being the defending champions but maintained a confident outlook. “We are going into this tournament as defending champions and we know it will not be easy because every team will bring their best against us,” she said. “But we have prepared well, and the girls understand what is at stake. Our focus is on executing our game plan and maintaining the high standards we have set.”

The 2025 edition of the COSAFA Girls’ U-17 Championship promises stiff competition, with regional teams aiming to topple Zambia from the top spot. However, the Copper Princesses’ blend of youthful talent, experience, and cohesion positions them as strong favourites heading into the tournament.

Zambia’s campaign will not only be about defending a title but also showcasing the depth of women’s football development in the country. The team’s recent successes at continental and global levels highlight the progress made by the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) and its commitment to nurturing female talent.

As the team touches down in Windhoek, the focus shifts to the pitch where Zambia will begin their title defense. Fans at home and across the region will be watching closely as the Copper Princesses aim to make history once more.

With a committed coaching staff, a battle-hardened squad, and the pride of a nation behind them, Zambia enters the 2025 COSAFA Girls’ Under-17 Championship not just to participate—but to win.
