Airtel Networks Zambia Plc, the country’s largest telecommunications services provider, has introduced a groundbreaking Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered Spam Alert Service to protect customers from the growing threat of mobile fraud. The innovative service, launched at a high-profile event in Lusaka, is designed to detect and alert users to suspicious SMS messages in real time.

The AI Spam Alert Service is a first-of-its-kind solution in Zambia and is being offered free of charge to all Airtel customers. It operates seamlessly across both smartphones and feature phones, with no need for downloads or manual activation. The service is automatically enabled for all users, ensuring instant protection from the moment it goes live.

Officiating at the launch, the Honourable Minister of Technology and Science, Mr. Felix Mutati, hailed the initiative as a timely and strategic move that supports Zambia’s digital transformation and national cybersecurity goals.

“This service not only enhances consumer protection but also supports Government’s broader agenda of digital transformation, innovation, and inclusive access to secure ICT services,” Minister Mutati said. “It is a timely and strategic response to cyber threats and aligns well with our 8th National Development Plan and the Cyber Security Act.”

The Spam Alert Service is powered by advanced AI algorithms that analyze incoming text messages and flag those that appear to be scam-related or suspicious. This helps users avoid falling victim to phishing schemes, fake promotions, and other types of mobile-based fraud that have become increasingly common with the rise of digital communication.

Speaking at the launch, Airtel Zambia Managing Director Mr. Hussam Baday reaffirmed the company’s dedication to safeguarding customer experience through innovation.

“The AI spam alert service is the first of its kind in the Zambian market,” said Mr. Baday. “We want our customers not only to stay connected but also to be protected. This innovation reflects our commitment to delivering cutting-edge solutions that make the digital experience safer and more enjoyable.”

Mr. Baday noted that as digital adoption continues to grow in Zambia and around the world, the risk of cyber threats has also escalated. Scam messages are becoming more sophisticated, posing serious risks to individuals and businesses alike. The Spam Alert Service is Airtel’s proactive response to this challenge, providing users with the tools they need to navigate the digital world safely.

The Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA) has also expressed strong support for the initiative. Director General Eng. Collins Mbulo commended Airtel Zambia for taking a proactive stance in consumer protection.

“As the regulator, we are pleased to see private sector players like Airtel taking decisive steps to safeguard consumers. This is an excellent example of how technology and innovation can strengthen public trust and national cybersecurity,” Eng. Mbulo said.

With the launch of the AI-powered Spam Alert Service, Airtel Zambia continues to lead the way in digital safety and innovation. This milestone marks a significant step forward in the fight against mobile fraud, ensuring that Zambians can enjoy the benefits of digital connectivity with greater confidence and peace of mind.
