In a recent meeting with a delegation from Deutsche Welle (DW), Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema emphasized the critical role of the media in upholding democratic values, calling it an indispensable pillar in the maintenance of a free and transparent society. The discussion, which was led by DW’s Managing Director Carsten von Nahmen, focused on the evolving nature of journalism in the digital age, especially in the context of citizen reporting and the expansion of social media platforms.
During the meeting, President Hichilema highlighted the significance of the media as the “Fourth Estate,” stressing its function in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of information. “As a pillar of democracy, the media is essential in informing, educating, and entertaining the public,” he said. “Beyond its traditional role, the media fosters development by equipping citizens with accurate and credible information necessary for informed decision-making.”
Despite the surge of social media and alternative news sources, President Hichilema underlined that traditional media continues to play a vital role in safeguarding truth and combating misinformation. He praised Deutsche Welle for its comprehensive coverage of Zambian, regional, and global affairs, acknowledging its contribution to fostering transparency and accountability through independent journalism.
The discussion also touched on the economic opportunities in Zambia, with President Hichilema extending an invitation to Deutsche Welle to further highlight Zambia as an investment destination. He emphasized his administration’s commitment to creating a conducive environment for foreign direct investment and leveraging international platforms like DW to showcase Zambia’s economic potential. “We are open for business with the world,” he reiterated, signaling the country’s readiness to engage with global investors.
The meeting also addressed environmental issues, particularly through DW’s collaboration with Zambia’s Diamond TV in launching Eco Africa, a program focused on climate change awareness. President Hichilema commended the initiative, emphasizing the importance of raising awareness about the environmental challenges faced by Africa and the global community at large.
This meeting underscored a shared commitment to journalistic integrity, sustainable development, and the role of a responsible press in safeguarding democracy. In an era increasingly dominated by digital media, both President Hichilema and Deutsche Welle reaffirmed the importance of maintaining a free and independent press as a cornerstone of a functioning democracy.
