The Media Self Regulation Council of Zambia (MSCZ) has welcomed and acknowledged President Hakainde Hichilema’s firm stance against the contentious Zambia Institute of Journalism Bill, expressing gratitude for his continued support of press freedom and self-regulation within the media landscape.
The affirmation came after State House Chief Communications Specialist Clayson Hamasaka, in a statement issued yesterday, confirmed the President’s total and unequivocal opposition to the proposed bill. Hamasaka emphasized that President Hichilema remains steadfast in defending media freedom, self-regulation, and the right to free expression, which he regards as pillars of a democratic society.
“President Hakainde Hichilema has reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to safeguarding press freedom, media self-regulation and the right to free expression,” Hamasaka stated.
The Zambia Institute of Journalism Bill, which has sparked concern among media stakeholders and freedom of expression advocates, was reportedly introduced by the Media Liaison Committee. However, Hamasaka clarified that it is not a government-driven initiative and does not reflect the administration’s policy direction.
In response, the MSCZ applauded President Hichilema’s position, describing it as a significant step towards ensuring that journalists and media houses in Zambia operate independently without fear of state interference or undue restrictions.
The Council reiterated that media self-regulation is essential in maintaining ethical standards and accountability, while also preserving the autonomy necessary for a vibrant and free press.
The MSCZ further urged all stakeholders to engage in inclusive and transparent dialogue on any future media reforms to ensure that they align with democratic principles and respect for human rights.
This latest development underscores the President’s continued alignment with democratic values and his ongoing support for a free and independent press in Zambia.
