The Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) has announced the opening of 32 new radio frequencies, offering opportunities for both new radio stations and existing broadcasting houses to expand their coverage. This move is part of the IBA’s ongoing efforts to enhance access to information in underserved and unserved regions across Zambia.

In a media briefing on Monday, IBA Board Chairperson Chikosola Chuula outlined the details of the new frequencies, which are available to broadcasters aiming to extend their reach. The IBA is particularly focused on ensuring that areas with limited or no radio coverage are included in this expansion effort.

“The Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) wishes to announce the opening of 32 new frequencies for new radio stations and existing broadcasting houses wishing to expand their coverage. The available frequencies are categorized as follows: Ikelengi 1, Kasempa 1, Kaoma 1, Mitete 1, Mkushi 1, Samfya 1, Mansa 1, Kawambwa 1, Luano 1, Mporokoso 1, Chiengi 1, Nyimba, among others,” Chuula stated.

The new frequencies are aimed at addressing gaps in radio coverage across various parts of Zambia, especially in rural and remote areas that have historically been underserved. The IBA is encouraging both new entrants to the radio industry and established stations looking to broaden their service areas to apply for these opportunities.

Chuula emphasized that this initiative aligns with the IBA’s mandate to promote diversity in broadcasting and ensure that all Zambians, regardless of their location, have access to a wide range of information and entertainment. By expanding radio coverage, the IBA hopes to contribute to greater public engagement, information dissemination, and national development.

For existing radio stations, the expansion of coverage through new frequencies provides an avenue to reach more listeners and cater to larger audiences in regions where demand for broadcast services is growing. For new radio stations, this is an opportunity to establish a presence in areas that have yet to be fully served by the media.

The IBA is now inviting interested parties to apply for the available frequencies, with a focus on unserved and underserved areas. The move is expected to foster greater competition in the broadcasting sector, promote media pluralism, and enhance the diversity of voices in Zambia’s media landscape.
