In today’s fast-paced world, finding the right balance between work demands and social life has become increasingly important. With rising stress levels, many are turning to stand-up comedy as a means of relaxation and stress management. In Lusaka, Time to Laugh Comedy has emerged as a consistent platform for laughter, hosting shows every last Friday of the month at Chrisma Hotel since last year.

Kasambwe Mpulamasaka, the founder of Time to Laugh Comedy, believes the monthly shows have created an ideal escape for revellers to unwind from the pressures of daily life.

“When people are happy with the quality of service or product, they won’t remember how much they spent. Zambians are now well exposed and informed; they know the difference between buffoonery and brilliant jokes,” he said.

Citing research from the Mayo Clinic in the United States, Mpulamasaka highlighted the benefits of laughter, including improved oxygen intake, increased endorphin release, and enhanced heart and lung function. He also noted that laughter strengthens the immune system by reducing stress-related chemical reactions in the body.

“Negative thoughts can weaken the immune system, while positive thoughts release neuropeptides that help fight stress and potentially more serious illnesses,” he explained.

Beyond the health benefits, laughter also plays a role in mental well-being, helping to combat depression and anxiety while boosting self-esteem.

The Rise of Stand-Up Comedy in Zambia

Comedy writer and actor Derick Chalo Kondowe, known as Dangerous Joburg, sees stand-up comedy as the next big thing in Zambia due to its relatability and fresh content. He believes the art form resonates with audiences because it touches on real-life issues such as family, commitment, and personal aspirations.

Over time, Time to Laugh Comedy has showcased some of Zambia’s finest comedic talents. Among them is Ackim Chibale, who humorously describes how he always carries his CV to family gatherings, hoping to meet an uncle who promises job opportunities—only for those promises to disappear along with unanswered calls and messages.

Rising comedian Chilangi Sims has also graced the stage, winning audiences over with his humorous take on relationships. His dating profile joke, “Seeking someone who understands that commitment is a four-letter word called ‘pain,’” has become a fan favorite.

As Lusaka’s comedy scene continues to grow, Time to Laugh Comedy is proving to be more than just a night of jokes—it is a space where people can de-stress, connect, and embrace the healing power of laughter.
