Former Kasenengwa legislator Sensio Banda has urged the Ministry of Justice to issue an official statement clarifying President Hakainde Hichilema’s recent comments on constitutional amendments. The President made the remarks during his visit to Kasama in Northern Province, sparking discussions on the proposed reforms.

Concern Over Partisan Involvement

In a statement released in Lusaka on Tuesday, Banda raised concerns about the participation of partisan figures in discussions on constitutional reforms. He cautioned that involving individuals aligned with political parties could undermine the credibility and integrity of the amendment process. He stressed that constitutional changes should be handled with neutrality and professionalism, ensuring that the focus remains on the broader national interest.

Banda specifically pointed to the role of UPND Media Director Mark Simuwe, who has been engaging with media outlets to explain the President’s remarks. He warned that Simuwe’s unofficial interpretations, made before a formal government position is issued, could create confusion and erode public trust in the process.

“If this trend continues, the damage may become irreversible by the time the government provides its official stance, leaving the public skeptical and less willing to engage,” Banda stated.

Call for Government-Led Communication

The former MP emphasized that official statements on constitutional matters should come from authorized government representatives, such as the Minister of Justice or the Chief Government Spokesperson. “These are legal and national issues that require formal government communication, not interpretations from a party official,” he said.

President Hichilema has encouraged various stakeholders, including civil society and religious organizations, to support constitutional amendments aimed at increasing women’s representation in elective positions ahead of the 2026 elections. Banda’s call highlights the importance of a structured and transparent approach to such critical national discussions.
