The Ministry of Green Economy and Environment has launched the Kids Climate Change Fair, a significant event aimed at strengthening climate action and environmental education in Zambia. The Fair, scheduled for March 14, 2025, in Lusaka, is designed to engage children in learning about climate change and sustainability as key components of the country’s sustainable development agenda.
Ephraim Shitima, Director of Green Economy and Environment, expressed the ministry’s commitment to introducing climate change education and sustainability principles at an early age. In a speech read on his behalf by Acting Principal Green Economy Development Officer, Dalitso Tembo, Mr. Shitima emphasized the importance of nurturing a generation that values and protects the environment for the country’s long-term development.
“The Kids Climate Change Fair provides an opportunity for children to learn, engage, and become active participants in climate action,” Shitima said. He explained that the fair aims to create an interactive platform where young people can gain a better understanding of the challenges posed by climate change and the actions needed to address them. By fostering such engagement, the ministry hopes to inspire future leaders to prioritize environmental sustainability.
The event will feature various activities, including educational workshops, interactive exhibitions, and presentations from environmental experts, offering children hands-on experience with environmental conservation practices. These activities are designed to not only raise awareness but also encourage children to take ownership of their environmental impact.
In support of this initiative, Ministry of Education Senior Jets Officer, Anecetus Moonga, praised the efforts of various stakeholders in promoting climate education among children. He highlighted the ministry’s dedication to supporting environmental education through the establishment of clubs in schools across the country. These clubs serve as platforms for students to learn about climate change and raise awareness among their peers.
“Clubs are being set up in various schools, providing a platform for children to learn about climate change and raise awareness amongst their peers,” said Mr. Moonga. He also emphasized that the ministry remains committed to fostering a culture of sustainability by integrating environmental education into the school curriculum.
The Kids Climate Change Fair marks an important milestone in Zambia’s efforts to engage the younger generation in environmental conservation. As the country strives to meet its climate goals and sustainable development targets, the event serves as a reminder that education and active participation in climate action begin with the youth. Through such initiatives, Zambia hopes to build a generation that is not only aware of the environmental challenges but also equipped to contribute to sustainable solutions.
