The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of veteran coach Mathews Phiri, who died at his residence in Kaunda Square.

FAZ President Andrew Kamanga described Phiri as an accomplished yet humble coach whose contributions to Zambian football will be remembered.

“On behalf of myself and the entire football family, I wish to express my deepest condolences to the family of the late Mathews Phiri, who was a lifetime football servant,” Kamanga said. “We are saddened by his death but are happy that the deceased honored us with many good football memories that we shall cherish as a football family.”

Phiri left an enduring mark on Zambian football, notably leading Red Arrows to a league title victory in 2004. He also had coaching stints with Nakambala Leopards, Muza FC, Lusaka City Council, and Circuit City, shaping the careers of many players along the way.

His passing is a great loss to the football community, but his legacy as a dedicated and talented coach will continue to inspire future generations.
