Global alcohol beverage giant Diageo hosted an exhilarating bartending competition last Monday, where the Top 10 Mix-off contenders battled it out in a high-stakes contest that tested their time management, flair, and focus.
This event marked the second round of the prestigious Bartender Competition, following an initial phase that featured 20 participants representing some of Zambia’s most renowned entertainment venues. The first round showcased unique cocktails that highlighted the contestants’ creativity and expertise in blending exquisite flavors.
The top ten vibrant contestants demonstrated their skills in a rigorous challenge, mixing, shaking, and stirring cocktails in an electrifying competition that had the audience captivated. Each contestant exhibited confidence and mastery, crafting intricate cocktails while competing against the clock.
Diageo is investing significantly in promoting the sophistication of Tanqueray, with the theme for this round being the ‘Tanqueray Speed Challenge.’ Competitors were required to mix six different cocktails within five minutes, showcasing precision in ingredient layering and theatrical presentation.
Commitment to Bartender Training and Skill Development
Diageo’s Senior Reserve Brand Ambassador, Joyce Mealyn, emphasized the importance of equipping bartenders with essential service skills to elevate the industry and sustain businesses.
“These skills are crucial in a bar as they form the foundation of a positive customer experience and contribute to the overall success of any venue,” Mealyn stated.
She further underscored the significance of precision, creativity, and dedication in excelling in the competitive bartending field. All participants had undergone bartender training offered by Diageo last year, which was available online to enhance accessibility. The training program ensures that bartenders acquire internationally recognized skills, empowering them to work both locally and abroad.
Exciting Prizes for the Winners
The competition not only celebrated the remarkable talent within Zambia’s bartending community but also provided contestants with significant opportunities for growth. The ultimate winner will receive a prize worth approximately US$2,000, the runner-up will be awarded a mobile bar to kickstart their own business, and the third-place winner will take home a professional bar kit.
Additionally, the first-place winner will be granted an exclusive training opportunity in South Africa, where they will work alongside industry professionals at one of the country’s premier restaurants.
Key Areas of Bartender Training
