The Zambia Women National Football Team, the Copper Queens, will play two international friendly matches against Malawi during the upcoming February 17-26 FIFA window. These matches are part of Zambia’s preparations for the Women Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) set to take place in Morocco in July 2025.
Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) General Secretary Reuben Kamanga announced the friendly matches, expressing excitement over the opportunity for the Copper Queens to continue their preparations. “We are delighted to announce that the Copper Queens will be in action during the FIFA window with two international friendly matches against Malawi. These games are organized as the first part of preparations for the WAFCON and will provide the newly appointed technical bench an opportunity to get down to work,” Kamanga stated.
The matches will be A-Grade fixtures, with both Zambia and Malawi expected to field their best players. Initially, FAZ had hoped to organize a six-nation tournament during this window, but logistical challenges led to its postponement. Despite this, the two friendlies will offer the Copper Queens valuable game time as they build up to the continental tournament.
Additionally, FAZ plans to host an awards gala on February 22, 2025, to celebrate and honor outstanding individuals who have contributed to the development of women’s football in Zambia. Kamanga highlighted the importance of recognizing the heroes of the women’s game, saying, “On 22nd February 2025, FAZ will hold an awards gala to honor various personalities for their contribution to the game.”
The international friendlies and the upcoming awards event mark a busy and important period for women’s football in Zambia as the Copper Queens gear up for the crucial African tournament in July.
