Zambia has taken a significant step toward energy sufficiency with the signing of 29 Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) between Zesco and Independent Power Providers (IPPs) across the country. This groundbreaking initiative will add 332 megawatts (MW) of solar power to the national grid, marking a major milestone in the nation’s transition toward a diversified and sustainable energy sector.

The agreements were made possible through the Micro-Generator Scheme and the Presidential Solar Initiative, both of which are designed to encourage investment in renewable energy. By expanding solar power generation, Zambia aims to reduce its dependency on hydropower, which has been increasingly vulnerable to climate-related disruptions such as droughts.

President Hakainde Hichilema welcomed this development, highlighting the importance of citizen participation in the energy sector as a driver of economic growth and long-term national prosperity.

“Our government is committed to ensuring that all Zambians have access to reliable electricity,” President Hichilema stated. “By opening up the energy sector, we are not only securing a sustainable energy supply but also fostering economic development and empowerment.”

This initiative is a key component of Zambia’s broader renewable energy strategy, which seeks to attract private sector investment and strengthen the country’s resilience against climate change. By embracing solar power, Zambia is positioning itself as a regional leader in sustainable energy, setting the stage for increased private sector involvement and future clean energy projects.

With these new PPAs in place, Zambia moves closer to achieving energy security, ensuring a more stable electricity supply for households, businesses, and industries nationwide. The expansion of renewable energy sources is expected to create jobs, stimulate economic activity, and contribute to the country’s long-term energy sustainability.
