Acting Energy Minister Felix Mutati has announced that 142 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) have been signed by local authorities to implement rural electrification projects funded through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

In October 2022, the Cabinet directed the Ministers of Finance and National Planning, Energy, and Local Government and Rural Development to allocate K1 million from each constituency’s CDF to support rural electrification initiatives. The objective of the program is to enhance electricity access in underserved areas by targeting critical public institutions.

Expanding Electricity Access

Providing an update through a ministerial statement in the National Assembly on Wednesday, Mutati emphasized that the funds are meant to electrify key public institutions in both rural and peri-urban areas. These include schools, health centers, and other facilities essential for social and economic development.

“In order to increase access to electricity for the rural population, in October 2022, Cabinet directed the Ministers of Finance and National Planning, Energy, and Local Government and Rural Development to allocate K1 million from each constituency’s CDF for rural electrification initiatives,” Mutati stated.

Progress and Future Plans

With 142 MoUs already signed, the government is making strides toward expanding the national grid and integrating renewable energy sources in rural communities. The Rural Electrification Authority (REA) has been tasked with overseeing project implementation and ensuring that resources are used efficiently.

The initiative aligns with Zambia’s broader agenda to achieve universal electricity access and support economic growth in rural areas. As the projects advance, authorities expect improved service delivery in health and education sectors while fostering entrepreneurship and job creation in electrified communities.

Further updates will be provided as the projects progress, with the government reaffirming its commitment to sustainable rural development through enhanced energy access.
