Zambia Athletics (ZA) is set for a historic leadership transition after long-serving president Elias Mpondela announced his decision to withdraw from the race for re-election. Having led the organization for 27 years, Mpondela’s exit paves the way for fresh leadership as ZA prepares to elect a new executive on March 22 during its Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Lusaka.
Mpondela Bows Out Amid Reflection on Legacy
Mpondela, who initially filed his nomination for another term, confirmed his withdrawal at a press briefing in Lusaka. Reflecting on his tenure, he expressed pride in his contributions to Zambia’s athletics development despite facing criticism.
“I have achieved all I can. I have been abused, my children have been abused. Why are you stoning my children? Are you stoning them because of the good things I have done for ZA in 27 years?” Mpondela questioned, seemingly responding to detractors.
He highlighted key achievements during his leadership, including Zambia’s representation at the Olympics, All Africa Games, and other international competitions. Notable successes include Sydney Siame’s medals at the All Africa Games and Muzala Samukonga’s participation at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where Zambia secured a bronze medal.
“Time will come when some people will regret how they treated me. Leadership comes with a cost, and I have always stood alone for the vision I had for ZA,” he added.
