Chief Government Spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa has expressed optimism that Zambia will experience a reduction in the rising cost of living in 2025. Speaking during a press briefing on Tuesday, Mweetwa attributed this projection to an anticipated bumper harvest and improved electricity supply, which he said would help stabilize the economy.

“The cost of living is largely influenced by the cost of production and the availability of essential goods. With a good rainy season leading to a super bumper harvest and electricity supply stabilizing, we expect the cost of living to begin to slow down in terms of escalation,” Mweetwa stated.

Zambia has been grappling with high inflation and an increased cost of essential goods, driven in part by global economic challenges and domestic factors such as drought-induced power shortages. The government’s confidence in a better economic outlook for 2025 is based on expectations of improved agricultural output and reduced pressure on energy resources.

Calls for Judiciary to Explain Reversal on Trial Broadcast

In the same briefing, Mweetwa also called on the Judiciary to explain why it reversed its decision to allow the live broadcast of the trial involving two witch doctors accused of attempting to harm President Hakainde Hichilema. The case, which has attracted significant public interest, was initially set to be aired, but the Judiciary later withdrew the decision without providing reasons.

Mweetwa emphasized that transparency in judicial proceedings is crucial for maintaining public trust and ensuring that citizens are informed about key legal matters.

“The Judiciary needs to explain to the people why it rescinded its decision to broadcast this trial. Citizens have a right to understand the reasoning behind such decisions, especially on cases of national interest,” he said.

The trial in question has sparked debate across the country, with many Zambians eager to follow the proceedings. Calls for increased judicial openness have grown, particularly in high-profile cases that involve public officials or matters of national security.

Government’s Focus on Economic Stability

As Zambia heads into 2025, Mweetwa reaffirmed the government’s commitment to stabilizing the economy and improving livelihoods. He stressed that policies aimed at boosting agricultural productivity and securing energy resources are key to ensuring long-term economic relief for Zambians.

With food and electricity being major drivers of inflation, a successful agricultural season and steady power supply could bring much-needed relief to households struggling with the high cost of living. However, economic analysts note that external factors, such as global market conditions and currency fluctuations, will also play a role in shaping Zambia’s financial landscape in the coming year.
