The government has awarded contracts for the construction of a greenfield airport in Nakonde District and the upgrading of Mfuwe International Airport in Mfuwe to Zambia National Service (ZNS) and Anhui Shui’an Construction Group, respectively.

Transport and Logistics Minister Frank Tayali announced that the contract for the construction of Nakonde Airport has been awarded to ZNS at a negotiated contract sum of K2,858,176,374.46, with a project duration of 36 months.

Speaking during the signing ceremony on Monday, Tayali detailed that the scope of works for the Nakonde Airport includes the construction of a greenfield airport, a 2.5km runway, a taxiway, housing units, and navigation equipment, among other key infrastructure components.

“The New Dawn Government recognises the significant role that aviation plays in economic development. To this effect, the government is committed to improving aviation infrastructure to boost connectivity and support economic growth,” Tayali stated.

The awarding of these contracts aligns with the government’s broader vision to modernize Zambia’s aviation sector, enhance regional trade, and improve access to key economic hubs.
