The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has announced that Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema will undertake a State Visit to Japan from February 3rd to 7th, 2025. This significant visit comes at the invitation of Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, marking a new chapter in the long-standing and mutually beneficial relationship between Zambia and Japan.
According to a press statement by Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mulambo Haimbe, the visit underscores the continued commitment of both countries to strengthening bilateral ties. It is also seen as a chance to reaffirm shared values and mutual aspirations, further deepening cooperation in key sectors.
During his stay, President Hichilema is set to hold high-level discussions with Prime Minister Ishiba. The talks will focus on vital areas, including trade, investment, and sustainable economic growth. A key highlight of the visit will be the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) aimed at enhancing collaboration in strategic sectors, fostering economic and technological advancements.
In addition to the diplomatic talks, President Hichilema is expected to engage with top officials from various Japanese organizations, such as the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Toyota Corporation, Fujita Corporation, and the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security. The discussions will focus on opportunities for investment in critical sectors, particularly road infrastructure, renewable energy, and other major development projects.
A unique aspect of the visit is the President’s scheduled site visits in Nagoya and Kyoto. These visits will offer insights into leading manufacturing companies and a waste treatment facility specializing in waste-to-energy solutions. These tours will serve to explore potential areas of technological collaboration and innovation between Zambia and Japan.
One of the most anticipated events during President Hichilema’s visit will be his keynote address at the Zambia-Japan Business Forum on February 6th, 2025, in Tokyo. This forum will serve as a platform for furthering economic partnerships and facilitating dialogue between business leaders from both nations, with a focus on building lasting trade relationships.
The visit to Japan is seen as a significant milestone in Zambia’s diplomatic and economic efforts, reflecting the country’s ongoing efforts to diversify its international relationships and attract more investments. The Zambia-Japan partnership is expected to continue evolving, creating new avenues for cooperation that will benefit both nations for years to come.
