The United Truck Drivers and Allied Workers Union of Zambia (UTDAWUZ) has announced an ambitious plan to venture into large-scale farming, a move aimed at contributing to the nation’s food security and alleviating hunger.
Union President Givers Moonga shared details of the initiative during an interview with Mafken News in Lusaka, emphasizing the Union’s resolve to mitigate the high cost of living, particularly regarding staple foods like maize.
All-Year Maize Production
UTDAWUZ aims to grow maize year-round using modern irrigation systems, which will ensure consistent supply even during the dry season. This initiative, according to Mr. Moonga, will not only stabilize maize availability but also generate significant revenue for the Union through the sale of surplus produce.
“The high cost of living, particularly for staples like maize, has become a challenge for many families. Our farming project seeks to reduce these costs while ensuring food security for Zambians,” said Mr. Moonga.
Livestock Farming Expansion
In addition to maize farming, the Union plans to venture into livestock production. This aspect of the project will focus on rearing animals to produce milk and meat for local and international markets. According to Mr. Moonga, multiple boreholes will be drilled to support irrigation systems and ensure the feasibility of winter maize farming and livestock rearing.
A Commitment to Economic Growth
Mr. Moonga highlighted the broader implications of the Union’s farming initiative, describing it as a proactive step toward addressing Zambia’s food security challenges. “This project is not just about farming; it’s about fostering economic growth and providing sustainable solutions to hunger,” he noted.
By diversifying into agriculture, UTDAWUZ is setting an example for other unions to adopt innovative approaches that contribute to the nation’s development while addressing critical societal issues.
The Union’s entry into farming is expected to inspire similar initiatives and strengthen Zambia’s position as a food-secure nation.
