The National Union for Miners and Allied Workers (NUMAW) President, Saul Simujika, has praised Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) for its remarkable achievement in increasing production to 8,000 metric tons. The development has ensured the security of 12,500 jobs in Zambia’s critical mining sector.
Speaking during an interview in Kitwe, Mr. Simujika emphasized the importance of this milestone in aligning with the government’s ambitious target of producing three million metric tons of copper annually by 2031.
Boosting Economic Growth
Mr. Simujika expressed gratitude to both KCM and the government for their efforts in stimulating economic growth and job creation despite ongoing economic challenges.
“This increase in production is not only a significant step for KCM but also a win for the nation’s economy. It brings us closer to achieving the government’s long-term copper production targets while safeguarding livelihoods,” he said.
Mining: Zambia’s Economic Backbone
The mining sector remains a cornerstone of Zambia’s economy, contributing substantially to gross domestic product, export earnings, and government revenue. Copper mining, in particular, has been a driving force behind the country’s economic growth and development for decades.
By ensuring job security for thousands of workers, KCM’s achievement strengthens the sector’s role in addressing unemployment and fostering sustainable economic growth.
Government Commitment
Mr. Simujika also commended the government’s dedication to job creation and its support for the mining industry. He called for continued collaboration between mining companies and the government to overcome economic challenges and achieve national goals.
“The government’s commitment to creating jobs, even in difficult times, is commendable. Initiatives like this reflect the positive strides being made to build a resilient and prosperous economy,” he added.
A Vision for the Future
With the increased copper production at KCM, Zambia is taking a step closer to becoming a global leader in copper production. The government’s vision of reaching three million metric tons of copper by 2031 now seems more attainable with the support of key industry players like KCM.
As the mining sector grows, stakeholders are optimistic that these efforts will continue to drive industrial development, create jobs, and secure Zambia’s position as a major player in the global mining industry.
