Government Clarifies Sugilite Reserves in Luapula Province: Mining Continues

The government has assured the public that sugilite, a high-value mineral, has not been depleted in Luapula Province or in any other manganese mining areas across Zambia. Mines Minister Paul Kabuswe made the clarification in an interview on Tuesday, stating that sugilite reserves had only been exhausted at Moumbe Mine in Luapula Province, not the entire region.

Scientific Mining Approach at Moumbe Mine

“What the director of the geological survey was referring to—and this is the true, correct position—is that sugilite was discovered at Moumbe Mine,” Kabuswe explained. “So what we did as a ministry is to adopt a scientific approach to mining. What was being done before was akin to digging kandolo (sweet potatoes), without proper exploration and planning.”

The minister revealed that a team from the geological survey had been dispatched to Moumbe Mine to conduct detailed assessments and guide proper mining practices. This scientific approach aims to ensure the sustainable extraction of minerals while safeguarding the environment and preventing wastage.

Sugilite Reserves Beyond Moumbe Mine

Kabuswe emphasized that while sugilite reserves had been depleted at Moumbe Mine, the mineral remains abundant in other parts of Luapula Province and areas where manganese mining occurs. “There is no need for alarm. The depletion at Moumbe Mine does not mean the end of sugilite mining in the province or the country as a whole,” he assured.

Addressing Informal Mining Practices

The minister also highlighted the importance of formalizing mining activities to enhance accountability and maximize the economic benefits from mineral resources. In the past, informal and unregulated mining practices have resulted in resource mismanagement and limited contributions to national development.

“We are working to ensure that mining operations are properly regulated and that the proceeds from mining benefit not only investors but also the local communities and the nation,” Kabuswe said.

A Strategic Resource for Zambia

Sugilite, a rare and valuable mineral, has the potential to significantly contribute to Zambia’s economy if properly managed. Its demand in various industrial applications, including electronics and manufacturing, makes it a key asset in the country’s mining sector.

The government’s commitment to a scientific and sustainable approach to mining sugilite and other minerals underscores its broader strategy to optimize the management of Zambia’s natural resources. With proper exploration and regulation, the mining sector is expected to remain a vital contributor to economic growth and development in the country.

The assurance from Minister Kabuswe is a positive signal to stakeholders in the mining industry and local communities, reaffirming that Zambia’s rich mineral deposits are far from being exhausted.
