The Agriculture Climate Action Foundation (ACAF) has commended the Zambian government for fostering an investment-friendly environment, paving the way for transformative initiatives in the agricultural sector.
ACAF Executive Director Dr. Oliver Bulaya highlighted the recent groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the Integrated Phosphate Products Beneficiation Plant in Chilanga District, spearheaded by Sino Great Chemical Company Limited, as a milestone moment for Zambia’s agricultural development.
Speaking to ZANIS, Dr. Bulaya described the project as a game-changer for the country’s farming sector, emphasizing its potential to significantly reduce the cost of farming inputs. He noted that fertilizers are a cornerstone of agricultural productivity, which in turn drives food security and economic growth.
“By producing fertilizers domestically, we will reduce our dependence on imports, thereby insulating our agricultural sector from global market volatility,” Dr. Bulaya explained. “This development aligns with our national vision to promote sustainable agriculture and enhance food production capabilities.”
The upcoming fertilizer plant, according to Dr. Bulaya, is poised to offer wide-reaching benefits. It will empower farmers by making essential inputs more affordable, stimulate local economies through job creation, and attract further investments in the agricultural sector.
“This project will not only transform farming practices but also catalyze broader economic development. It demonstrates the kind of public-private collaboration that Zambia needs to build a resilient and sustainable agricultural system,” he added.
The ACAF lauded the government’s efforts in creating policies and initiatives that encourage investments in agriculture, a sector that forms the backbone of the country’s economy.
The Integrated Phosphate Products Beneficiation Plant is expected to enhance local production capabilities, contribute to the realization of Zambia’s sustainable development goals, and position the country as a leader in agricultural innovation within the region.
With projects like these, Zambia is making strides toward self-sufficiency in agricultural inputs, fostering a more resilient farming sector capable of withstanding global challenges. ACAF continues to advocate for such forward-thinking initiatives, underscoring their importance in achieving long-term food security and economic prosperity.
