The Zambia Police Service (ZP) has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing the growing gun culture in the country through proactive measures, including firearm sensitisation and enforcement of firearm laws.

ZP Public Relations Officer Rea Hamoonga emphasized that gun ownership comes with significant responsibilities. Speaking to ZANIS, Mr. Hamoonga cautioned firearm holders to strictly adhere to regulations governing firearm usage.

“The law is clear, and if anyone contravenes the laws governing firearm use, they shall face consequences, which include the revocation of their firearm licence,” he warned.

Sensitisation and Enforcement

The police have launched gun ownership sensitisation programs to educate the public on responsible firearm handling and the implications of misuse. Mr. Hamoonga stressed that firearm licences are not absolute rights but conditional privileges, requiring careful adherence to the law.

He also highlighted that the Inspector General of Police has the authority to revoke firearm licences without compensation for individuals found misusing their weapons.

“The Zambia Police is committed to acting against those who have committed firearm crimes and ensuring that justice is served,” he added.

Collaboration with Stakeholders

In response to concerns raised by Lusaka Province Minister Sheal Mulyata regarding the growing prevalence of firearms in society, ZP assured the public of its dedication to promoting responsible gun ownership.

Mr. Hamoonga noted that the police would continue working with stakeholders to foster a culture of accountability among firearm holders. “We are committed to ensuring that firearms are handled with care and responsibility for the safety and well-being of all citizens,” he said.

Addressing Gun Culture

The rise in firearm misuse has become a pressing issue in Zambia, sparking debates on the need for stricter regulations and increased public awareness. By taking a firm stance against the misuse of firearms and educating the public, ZP aims to curb this growing trend.

Through collaborative efforts and enforcement of firearm laws, Zambia Police seeks to ensure that the nation remains a safe and secure environment for all.

This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to addressing public safety concerns while fostering a culture of accountability and responsible gun ownership.
