Government Responds to Fall Army Worm Infestation in Zambia

The Zambian government has reported isolated instances of fall army worm infestations in several districts, including Lufwanyama, Mumbwa, Shibuyunji, and Monze, as the country grapples with these destructive pests. The Ministry of Agriculture has acknowledged the presence of army worms and is actively addressing the issue by procuring chemicals to mitigate the impact of these infestations on crops.

Dr. Chizumba Shepande, the Director for Agriculture in the Ministry, confirmed the occurrence of fall army worms during this year’s farming season, noting that the ministry had received reports of their presence in various areas. “Yes, yes indeed. In fact, we are working hand in hand with the Meteorological Department under the Ministry of Green Economy. Those officers from meteorology give us information about the rainfall patterns because we are now producing an agro-meteorological bulletin every 10 days which contains information,” Dr. Shepande stated.

The Ministry of Agriculture’s collaboration with the Meteorological Department aims to keep farmers informed through regular updates about weather patterns and potential risks to crops, helping them take necessary precautions. The bulletin, which is published every 10 days, plays a vital role in guiding farmers to anticipate and manage environmental challenges, including the spread of pests like the fall army worm.

The government’s quick response in procuring chemicals to tackle the army worm threat is part of a broader effort to safeguard Zambia’s agricultural sector, which is crucial to the country’s economy. Farmers are urged to stay vigilant and to report any suspected infestations so that timely intervention can be made.

While the army worm infestations remain isolated for now, the government continues to monitor the situation closely and is prepared to take further action to protect the nation’s crops and ensure food security.
