The second edition of the Russian-African Media Forum for Young Media Practitioners took place from October 21 to 22, 2024, at the Institute of World Economy Business Hall at RUDN University, named after Patrice Lumumba. This pivotal event brought together media professionals, educators, and young practitioners from Russia and Africa to discuss and explore collaborative efforts, innovation, and solutions to pressing media-related challenges.

The forum was centered on two key themes: Journalism Education and Young Professionals’ Collaboration in Russia and Africa and Media Literacy as an Instrument for Combatting Disinformation. These discussions provided a comprehensive platform for addressing the evolving landscape of media and journalism in both regions.

Key Highlights of the Forum

The grand opening featured influential figures from both Russian and African media, where the significance of the forum and its continuity was emphasized. Leading professionals and educators in the media sector underscored the importance of collaboration in strengthening media relations and fostering a deeper understanding of regional challenges.

Roundtable Discussions

The roundtable discussions were lively and insightful, focusing on two main concerns: the battle against disinformation and combating stereotypes. Industry experts, educators, and young media professionals delved into these issues, offering solutions and strategies for a more accurate representation of both regions in the media.

Resolutions and Commitments

At the conclusion of the forum, participants affirmed several key resolutions aimed at fostering long-term cooperation and growth in the media sector. These resolutions include:

  1. Celebrating RUDN University’s Role: The forum highlighted RUDN University’s critical role in educating African students, especially in the media and communication sectors. Over 1,500 African professionals have been trained by the university this year, providing a significant contribution to the development of young media talent.
  2. Strengthening Media Collaboration: There was a consensus on the need for Russian and African media outlets to collaborate more intensively, particularly in erasing stereotypes and promoting mutual understanding. It was acknowledged that Russian media outlets, such as the Sputnik Africa Initiative, have made progress in this direction, but there remains room for growth, particularly in the use of native languages for broader reach.
  3. Cultural and Language Exchange: The importance of language exchange between Russia and Africa was emphasized. Some schools in Moscow have already begun teaching African languages, including Swahili, Amharic, Yoruba, and Arabic, while Russian language centers are being established in various African countries.
  4. Media Opportunities in Russia: Russia’s unique media landscape provides significant opportunities for young African practitioners. Participants were encouraged to leverage training programs in Russia for personal development, returning to their home countries to apply their new skills.
  5. Art and Culture as Diplomacy: Art and culture were identified as crucial elements in strengthening the Russia-Africa relationship. Recent exhibitions of African art in Moscow were praised as excellent examples of cultural diplomacy.
  6. Masterclass on VR Filmmaking: A special masterclass on virtual reality (VR) filmmaking was held, demonstrating the use of cutting-edge technology in storytelling. The session, titled “VR Film ‘Traveling Over Moscow’”, showcased how modern media projects can preserve and share cultural heritage.
  7. Scholarships and Partnerships: The forum’s immediate impact was evident, with two young media professionals from Africa receiving scholarships for master’s programs. Additionally, a business meeting between Kaduna State University and RUDN University initiated plans for further partnerships, solidifying the long-term goals of the forum.

The Russian-African Media Forum 2024 was a resounding success, reinforcing the importance of collaboration, innovation, and cultural exchange in shaping the future of media. As both regions continue to navigate the complexities of modern media landscapes, the discussions and resolutions made during this forum will undoubtedly play a key role in strengthening ties and advancing the media sector in both Russia and Africa.
