The National Sports Council of Zambia (NSCZ) has issued a strong statement denouncing unwarranted attacks on Zambian football star Barbra Banda, following her recent win of the prestigious BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year Award.
Barbra Banda, celebrated as one of Zambia’s top female athletes, continues to inspire millions with her remarkable journey and achievements. The NSCZ congratulated her on this milestone, highlighting her as a beacon of hope and resilience for women and girls, particularly during the ongoing 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.
Attacks on Barbra Banda
Despite her historic win, Barbra has been subjected to baseless and harmful accusations from foreign tabloids and individuals, including women who are global influencers. The NSCZ expressed disappointment at these attacks, which they deemed abusive and bordering on hate speech.
“These unjustified attacks are in stark contrast to the many accolades Barbra has earned due to her exceptional performance in major global competitions, such as the World Cup and Olympic Games,” stated Sombwa Musunsa, NSCZ Director/CEO.
The Council reaffirmed that Barbra’s participation in these events is a clear testament to her eligibility and recognition by global sports governing bodies.
A Call for Solidarity
The NSCZ urged Barbra to remain steadfast in the face of these challenges and continue her journey of inspiring others. The statement also called on the global community to condemn hate speech and protect athletes who face similar challenges.
“As the NSCZ, representing over 50 national sports federations including the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ), we strongly condemn these unwarranted attacks. We will continue to stand with Barbra, ensuring her rights are upheld and her legacy protected,” Musunsa added.
A Global Icon
Barbra Banda has not only elevated Zambia’s profile in women’s football but has also become a symbol of perseverance and excellence in the sports world. Her achievements resonate with many, especially in a world where women often face systemic challenges that hinder their progress.
The NSCZ reiterated its commitment to supporting Barbra and ensuring a conducive environment for her continued success.
The call to action is clear: the global sports community must rally together to protect and uplift icons like Barbra Banda, whose stories inspire hope and courage across borders.
