Kabwe Warriors, affectionately known as “The Magnificent People’s Team,” have made ABSA Cup qualification their primary goal this season. Under the steady leadership of coach Mumbamba Numba, the team has been showing remarkable progress, according to the Warriors’ technical committee chairman, Noel Kasonde.

Speaking about the team’s resurgence, Kasonde praised Numba’s approach, emphasizing his fatherly guidance and patience. This has been particularly evident in reviving key players like defender Kabaso Chongo, whose influence now anchors the Warriors’ defense. Young talents Simon Tonga and Munda Phiri, brought in from Makeni Stars, have shown promising development, while the return to form of former Under-20 national goalkeeper Mangani Banda has further strengthened the squad.

“They are coming to the party,” Kasonde noted, adding that Chongo’s contributions have been pivotal.

Depth and Competition

The club has avoided player sales, focusing instead on bolstering their squad. Recent acquisitions include Edward Tembo, Charles Sichilima, Tyson Banda, and Lasmond Phiri, all aimed at building depth and fostering healthy competition within the team.

“Our immediate focus is on qualifying for the ABSA Cup before turning our attention to the MTN Super League championship. With the current crop of leaders, the Warriors are on a steady path to reclaiming their glory,” Kasonde added.

A Legacy of Excellence

Kabwe Warriors are no strangers to success. Boasting 34 top-flight titles, they are among Zambia’s most decorated football clubs. Their trophy cabinet includes league triumphs in 1968, 1970, 1971, 1972, and 1987. Beyond league championships, the club has excelled in domestic cup competitions, including:

  • Charity Shield Wins: 1968, 1970–1973, 1988, 1992
  • BP Top Eight Cup: Eight wins between 1970 and 2007
  • Mosi Cup Victories: Six wins, spanning 1967 to 2003
  • Heroes and Unity Cup: Four wins between 1971 and 1992
  • Champion of Champions Cup: 1987, 1989, 1992
  • Coca-Cola Cup: 2006

This impressive history solidifies Kabwe Warriors’ reputation as a formidable force in Zambian football.

With their eyes set firmly on the ABSA Cup, the Warriors are positioning themselves for a strong comeback. “The Magnificent People’s Team is back,” Kasonde declared confidently, signaling a new era for the club.

Their loyal fans eagerly await the outcome as the team works tirelessly to meet its targets and possibly secure more silverware for the Railway Stadium.
