Harare, Zimbabwe – Fugitive Petauke Central Member of Parliament, Emmanuel Jay Banda, has been apprehended in Harare, where he was reportedly renting a flat. This development follows his escape from lawful custody in Zambia in August 2024.
Zambian Home Affairs and Internal Security Minister, Jack Mwiimbu, confirmed the arrest in a press briefing held in Lusaka this afternoon. Mr. Mwiimbu stated that Banda was captured yesterday and is currently detained at a police station in Harare. The Zambian government is coordinating with Zimbabwean authorities to extradite the lawmaker back to Zambia.
Opposition Claims Addressed
Minister Mwiimbu also addressed claims made by the opposition Patriotic Front that Banda surrendered to authorities in an effort to retain his parliamentary seat. This speculation followed a seven-day ultimatum issued by National Assembly Speaker Nelly Mutti, requiring Banda to report to authorities or risk losing his position as MP.
Mwiimbu clarified that Banda did not voluntarily surrender but was apprehended by law enforcement. The government remains committed to ensuring his return to face justice in Zambia.
Awaiting Extradition
Banda’s capture brings an end to months of evasion since his escape, which had sparked controversy and calls for accountability. His extradition process is now underway, with Zambian authorities determined to bring him back to face charges.
This case has garnered significant public and political attention, highlighting the importance of cross-border cooperation in enforcing the rule of law.
