Socialist Party President, Dr. Fred M’membe, has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Cynthia Sara Zukas, an influential figure in Zambia’s art scene, who passed away two days ago at the age of 93. In his eulogy, Dr. M’membe described Mrs. Zukas as a “selfless” and “descent human being,” emphasizing her deep care for others and the profound impact she had on those around her.
Cynthia Zukas, renowned as an artist and the director of the Lechwe Trust Art Gallery, was not only a celebrated figure in Zambia’s cultural landscape but also a guiding presence to many individuals throughout her life. She was the wife of prominent veteran politician and activist Simon Zukas, who passed away in 2021.
In his tribute, Dr. M’membe praised Mrs. Zukas for her immense contribution to both the arts and society at large. “I thank Cynthia Zukas for giving me an opportunity to share a great life. She was like a parent to some of us,” Dr. M’membe said. He went on to recall how his own political journey was influenced by the Zukas couple, citing that he had joined the South African Communist Party in 1978 through the friends of Simon and Cynthia. Their influence on him and many others was instrumental in shaping his understanding of life and values.
“You can read many books, but they won’t teach you how to live as a human being better than you could learn from Cynthia and Simon,” Dr. M’membe added, highlighting how their actions and wisdom were a living lesson in human decency and compassion. He reflected on how those who interacted with Cynthia and Simon had the privilege of learning how to be better humans and how to live in a responsible, community-oriented way.
Dr. M’membe concluded by expressing his gratitude for Cynthia Zukas’s legacy, saying, “These were descent human beings. Cynthia cared for other people. I thank God for her great life.” The tribute served as both a celebration of her life and an acknowledgment of the lasting impact she had on countless individuals, both personally and professionally.
Her passing marks the end of an era for those who knew her, but the lessons she imparted and the connections she fostered will continue to resonate in the hearts of many. Cynthia Zukas will be remembered not only for her artistic contributions but also for her unwavering love and care for her community and the generations she helped shape.
